Senior Director, Tax

The candidate will report to the VP Tax Strategies and join a team responsible for all aspects of AB income tax planning, M&A and tax policy. The role will primarily focus on state and local income tax matters and it is located in New York City.

Key responsibilities

Tax Planning and Research:

  • Develop and implement multi-disciplinary, multi-state reviews that analyze income, franchise, sales and use, payroll, ad valorem and other taxes to identify optimal filing options, exemptions, credits and incentives, and corporate structures that can minimize AB’s tax burden
  • Assist in preparing and maintaining models of state tax impacts of Federal Tax Reform and state legislation to accurately calculate any potential state tax liability
  • Participate in the review of state tax filing positions and analyze impact to the Company
  • Monitor state tax legislation changes and assist with analysis of the impact to the Company
  • Participate in researching and documenting positions to support conclusions on various state tax issues
  • Identify areas of opportunity for process improvement with respect to state tax compliance and provision and support the implementation of technology tools and automation of processes

Tax Policy:

  • Work with the Government Affairs Group in matters related to State Tax helping with understanding and engaging on proposed and enacted legislation
  • Participate in Trade Association and Coalitions to support the position of the company in state and local tax matters


  • Support merger/acquisition teams focusing on due diligence, tax strategy analysis, and integration
  • Perform complex tax research and planning related to determining corporate income tax consequences of acquisitions, divestitures and other transactions

Compliance and Audit Support:

This role will work closely with the Tax Operations team in St Louis on the following matters:

  • Support and provide advice on the preparation of all State and Local Income and Franchise Tax Returns
  • Support state tax audits

  • Participate in discussions with senior management on state and local tax- related issues
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, specifically Excel (e.g. Pivot tables, VLOOKUP’s)

Job Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or business
  • Masters Degree in Tax, JD/LL.M in Taxation, and/or CPA certification
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant tax experience
  • Experience with Big Four accounting firm, law firm or large corporation with complex transactions
